What It Allows
A Type 08 licensee may import firearms, firearm parts and ammunition, and may also deal in what is imported. The fee is $150 per year, three years at a time.
Permits, Not Just A License
Each importation requires an approved ATF Form 6 permit before the goods ship, with a Form 6A filed after entry. Importers also register with the State Department under ITAR where applicable and clear the shipment through CBP.
- ATF Form 6 — import permit application, filed per shipment
- ATF Form 6A — record of importation after release from customs
- Sporting-purpose and non-importable categories restrict what can be brought in
- Federal excise tax obligations are administered by TTB
Marking Requirements
Imported firearms must be marked with the importer's name and city and state, the model, caliber, serial number and country of origin, within the time limits ATF sets after release from customs.
Fees, forms and processing rules change through ATF rulemaking. Confirm current requirements with ATF and your state and local authorities before you file.
