FFL Zoning Requirements

ATF cannot issue a license if conducting the business at your premises would violate state or local law. Local approval is therefore part of the federal application, even though no federal form asks for it.

Who To Contact

Start with the office that controls land use at your address.

Fire marshal, where an inspection or occupancy sign-off applies
State firearms-dealer licensing authority, where one exists
The CLEO with jurisdiction over your premises

What To Ask For

Ask specifically whether your zoning district permits the intended activity, whether a home-occupation permit is required, and whether any local ordinance restricts firearms sales. Get the answer in writing or by email so you can show the investigator.

If Zoning Says No

Options are a variance or conditional-use permit, a different premises in a permitted district, or narrowing your activity to something the district allows. Do not file first and hope.
