Type 01 FFL — Dealer

The Type 01 is the workhorse license: retail dealing, transfers for other people, and most gunsmithing operate under it.

Updated 2026-08-01

What It Allows

A Type 01 dealer may buy and sell firearms as a business, receive firearms in interstate commerce, run transfers for private parties, and perform gunsmithing services.

What It Costs

The application fee for a Type 01 is $200 for a three-year license, with a lower renewal fee. Fees are set by the ATF fee schedule and should be verified before you file.

What It Requires

Dealer obligations are the ones ATF inspects most.

  • Acquisition and disposition record kept current
  • Form 4473 completed and retained for every transfer
  • NICS checks where required, with proper delay handling
  • Multiple handgun sale reporting
  • Theft or loss reported within 48 hours of discovery

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I run a Type 01 from home?
Yes if local zoning and home-occupation rules allow the activity at that address.
Do I need a Type 01 to do transfers for others?
Yes — receiving and transferring firearms for other people is dealing.
